Key fields of intervention :

When AEA first began working in education 26 years ago, we focused strictly on educational resources. Today, our mission encompasses much more. In addition to training teachers and helping build and equip schools, we also help empower communities and States to build responsive and appropriate educational offerings. We encourage these actors to work together, creating strong, lasting dialogues between them.

We base all our actions on the following set of guiding principles:

Increase access to elementary education...
  • Improve school conditions and create favorable learning environments by building schools, supplying equipment, setting-up school cafeterias...
  • Reduce the reasons children don't attend school by addressing enfant diseases, household and fieldwork, care for younger siblings...

Improve the quality of educational systems...
  • Train and provide equipment for teachers, school inspectors and librarians
  • Ensure access to potable water and inform communities about disease prevention

Encourage diversity of educational opportunities...
  • Open education to marginalized children and youth including dropouts, working children physically and mentally challenged children, street children, orphans...
  • Develop alternatives to the traditional educational system by creating community centers, nurseries and professional programs that address the needs of individuals at all ages

Reinforce local community competence...
  • Accompany and reinforce communities as they design, implement and sustain educational programs and related actions
  • Encourage cooperation between public institutions, local NGOs, parent-teacher associations...

Mobilize citizens and institutions for the educational cause...
  • Raise awareness and train the general public about the link between education and development
  • Work to place education at the center of local, state and institutional development programs.

SUPPORTING ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF EDUCATION IN AFRICA

In Africa, more than 40 million individuals are excluded from the traditional educational system. AEA helps local actors develop alternative forms of education, including community schools and professional training centers. Since 2004, AEA has contributed to the creation of 91 educational centers in Niger, 149 in Guinea and 100 in Senegal. These centers have provided quality educational opportunities for 85,000 disadvantaged individuals.

SCHOOLING GIRLS IN SENEGAL

In Senegal, only 64% of girls go to school; one out of three women can not read. AEA has been present in Senegal's Kolda region since 1988, making the education of girls a priority. In 1996, only 16% of school-aged girls were enrolled in elementary school in the Kolda region. Thanks in large part to AEA's actions, the number of girls attending school increased to 79.6% in 2002 and to 102.1% in 2005.

SUPPLYING TEXTBOOKS TO SCHOOLS IN TANZANIA

In Tanzania, the price of textbooks is high and availability is low. In most schools, 13 children share on book. AEA has sought to improve this situation in the Mwanza region near Lake Victoria. In one project, we distributed 19,365 textbooks and trained teacher-librarians in 51 schools. This greatly helped improve access to materials as well as teaching quality.
