Since the Etats Généraux of Education in 1981 and in the following policy reforms and decisions in this sector, Senegal has continually shown a desire to reform its education system, which is dealing with problems concerning its efficiency despite 34% of the annual budget being allocated to this sector.
Senegal has signed up its total objectives for the development of education, within the PDEF framework (A 10 Year Programme for Education and Teaching), for a period of 10 years. The launch, initially to be in 1999/2000 has just taken place. This programme fixes the objectives, strategies and financial needs for the education sector. Amongst the objectives of the PDEF is the expansion of access to education, improvement of quality of teaching and the efficient management of the education system.
Within the framework of PDEF, the most pertinent strategies will be put in place, with the aim of giving the possibility of education to all of the country’s children by 2010 but also to make the system more efficient and better adapted to local requirements.
