Burkina Faso was an obvious choice for a programme. The "country of honest men" has a very low level of schooling. However it has an institutional framework and a strong community mentality.
With the strong support of the country’s government, we have decided to start a programme in conjunction with ActionAid. We are hoping, with the main aim of respond to the educational needs of the local people, to also reinforce local partnerships, and put in place new projects.
In order to do this, we will be creating programmes in three priority areas.
The region of Gagna a rural area, where the level of schooling is very low, the region of Sanguie which has been badly affected by social problems such as alcoholism and aids; and the peripheral urban areas of Ouagadougou where rapid urbanisation has created a state of such extreme poverty that school is no longer a priority
